Lori Coon, M.A., LPC

In my opinion, we could all use a therapist. A place where we feel judgment free and secure in the fact that someone isn’t going to tell our deepest, darkest secrets if they become upset with us.

My interest in counseling began during a time that I was teaching Women Studies at a local church.

I realized that most of the women in my class were struggling with deep emotions and past traumas making it difficult for them to be their best fulfilling the roles that they were currently involved in.

I became very aware that I could listen to their concerns as a friend, but I lacked the tools to really help them heal. This brought a desire for me to learn and become informed so that I could lend more than a listening ear. I decided to return to college and pursue this passion. Marriage and having a child sometimes proposed difficulty, but working with these women gave me motivation to complete my goal.

My first job after completing my degrees was at Crisis Center where I worked with women, men, and children who were victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The trauma victims that I was privileged to work with added to my compassion and patience.

I’m currently employed at a mental health facility. I use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) & Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) working with all types of individuals who struggle with maintaining a productive life and a healthy thought process in spite of mental illness.

No one is exempt from the far-reaching effects of imbalances or situational happenings beyond our control. The highlight of my counseling career is when I give witness to my client’s, enlightening, ‘Ah Ha’ moments.

I enjoy working with all ages and have no gender preference. I’ve worked extensively with children and youth in the role of a teacher and a music director prior to my counseling career. These positions gave me insight to emotions, passions, and the fear of being vulnerable.

I was greatly influenced by being the daughter and granddaughter of ministers. I’m aware of the silent needs of individuals, the importance of confidentiality and the struggles to keep up appearances in our society. I have two fantastic sisters and a wonderful son who has definitely added to my repertoire of working with teens and young adults.

I enjoy sailing, traveling, and spending time sitting beside the ocean. In my opinion, if we could all sit beside the ocean at night, and listen to the ebb and flow of the tide, our stress would lighten.
